To return to the office, or not to return, that is the question.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some prominent businesses like Spotify are steadfastly upholding flexible work-from-home policies, stating resoundingly that \u201cremote staff aren\u2019t children.\u201d Other tech giants, however, such as Amazon and iPhone challenger, Nothing, have made U-turns on their previous work-from-home policies, implementing return-to-office policies across the board for all corporate employees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking their lead from the tech heavyweights, return-to-office (RTO) mandates are now widespread for businesses throughout the United States. This will remain true even despite the attrition of former remote hires who were attracted by the flexible work location policies of a few short years ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The talent that big tech is likely to lose enacting an RTO, due to remote workers being hired out-of-state, their family commitments, or because of inhibitively long commutes, will be quickly replaced by inner-city talent. Or by those willing to travel long distances every day for the CV boost and career acceleration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular businesses don\u2019t have the same luxury of vast workforces to instantly fill gaps, or talent pools of hundreds of thousands clamoring for just an interview. So, SMBs will likely have to work with their employees to find some common return-to-office ground. Or offer better incentives if they want to enact a full RTO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the current mindsets and preferences of office workers and managers on the ground (or in their home offices) is going to be crucial for successfully enacting an RTO. Setting out effective in-office strategies and ensuring positive cultural dynamics will be beneficial for both employees and employers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Involving_Employees_in_the_Conversation\"><b>Involving Employees in the Conversation<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For regular businesses, their return-to-office considerations shouldn&#8217;t only be around any projected bumps to bottom lines or work culture. Or just about taking their lead from the tech giants, who have vastly different operational parameters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the pandemic ushered in the \u2018New World of Work,\u2019 motivations, aspirations and what people deem important have changed. Mandating an RTO won\u2019t simply turn back the clock to pre-2020 times and the \u2018golden years\u2019 of buzzing offices that the big corporates are trying to recreate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not going to be as easy as that. For businesses to effectively pull off a full RTO, it will require redefining what the office experience means for a changed, modern workforce. Further, the climate needs to be shifted away from the doomsaying RTO headlines, instead creating a positive narrative and real, enticing workplace changes on-site. Changes that will benefit both the business and employees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Survey_of_Office_Workers_on_Return-to-Office_Mandates\"><b>Survey of Office Workers on Return-to-Office Mandates\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get a better idea of where employees actually stand on this issue, whether they currently work on-site, hybrid, or fully remote, we at<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/offices.net\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offices.net<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted a comprehensive survey of U.S. office workers aged 25 to 65, exploring their preferences as they currently stand, and their perceptions regarding the widespread return to the office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our survey, which was restricted to participants who\u2019d previously transitioned to remote work due to the pandemic, offers valuable insights for businesses that are currently looking at ways to entice their workers back to the office.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Employees_General_RTO_Perception\"><b>Employees\u2019 General RTO Perception<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The transition back to the office, as expected, has been met with mixed feelings. <\/span><b>56%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of our survey\u2019s respondents stated that they have returned to the office full-time at their employer&#8217;s request, while <\/span><b>40.5%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of workers are hybrid, and only <\/span><b>3.5%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are fully remote. These figures align with the demonstrated push towards \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d from companies and a resumption of traditional work settings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked about their preferred number of days in the office, though, responses varied.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Less than a quarter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of respondents were happy with the resumption of the traditional 5 days in-office, highlighting a clear desire for flexibility from employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2403\" src=\"https:\/\/offices.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/return-to-office-trends-survey-of-employees-pie-chart-days-in-office-preferences-offices.net_.png\" alt=\"A pie chart breaking down office employees\u2019 work mode preferences of the number of weekdays they would prefer to work in the office in person if they had the choice. Image at Offices.net.\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/offices.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/return-to-office-trends-survey-of-employees-pie-chart-days-in-office-preferences-offices.net_.png 640w, https:\/\/offices.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/return-to-office-trends-survey-of-employees-pie-chart-days-in-office-preferences-offices.net_-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to office employee preferences around work modes, here are the standout insights from our survey:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><b>37.5%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of workers prefer working 1\u20132 days in the office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><b>30%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> favor a balanced approach with 3\u20134 days in the office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><b>24%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of office workers are comfortable working in the office full-time, five days a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><b>8.5%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would prefer not to work in the office at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Comparing_Productivity_Differences_Between_Remote_and_In-Office\"><b>Comparing Productivity Differences Between Remote and In-Office<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Productivity between those who work remotely and in the office doesn\u2019t seem to vary greatly according to our survey respondents, with <\/span><b>39.5%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feeling more productive in the office and <\/span><b>35%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finding themselves more productive at home. The remainder, <\/span><b>25.5%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of office workers stated their productivity did not alter regardless of location.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This near-even split in work location productivity suggests that the optimal work environment for employees may be personal, and instead only vary across different roles and industries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Office_Workers_Opinions_on_Flexible_Working_Hours\"><b>Office Workers\u2019 Opinions on Flexible Working Hours<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One major advantage of the global shift to remote work was improved work-life balance, as employees saved time usually spent on morning preparations and long commutes. That drastic change from the traditional 9-to-5, with anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour commuting each way morning and night, allowed more opportunities for personal pursuits and family time. People have understandably become accustomed to this and are loath to give it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another important\u2014though probably unsurprising\u2014finding from the survey is the high value that employees currently place on flexible working hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2399\" src=\"https:\/\/offices.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/return-to-office-trends-survey-of-employees-bar-chart-motivating-factors-for-rto-offices.net_.png\" alt=\"A horizontal bar chart with different work perks listed vertically on the Y axis and the average level of importance office workers place on them on the X axis, where 1 is the most important, and 10 is not important. With a mean score of <\/span><b>3.7 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across all office-working survey respondents, <\/span><b>flexible hours emerged above all other perks as the most critical factor influencing their willingness to return to the office.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This clear preference highlights employees\u2019 continued focus on their work-life balance, and the pressing need for businesses to adapt to these changed worker expectations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Other_Motivators_for_Returning_to_the_Office\"><b>Other Motivators for Returning to the Office<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond flexibility, several other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/offices.net\/news\/future-office-building-facilities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amenities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and incentives were highlighted as significant motivators for returning to the office:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><b>Free or subsidized meals and snacks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the next most popular perk after flexible hours, scoring a mean rank of <\/span><b>4.5 out of 10<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from our survey respondents and reflecting the appeal of cost-saving benefits and convenience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><b>Social opportunities with coworkers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>onsite caf\u00e9s or restaurants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also ranked highly in desirability, indicating that social interaction and community aspects are crucial for a pleasant in-office experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, amenities like <\/span><b>onsite child care<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>end-of-trip facilities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (e.g., bike storage, personal lockers, and showers) are seen as less critical motivators for office attendance, only scoring <\/span><b>7<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>6 out of 10<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, respectively, in terms of their priorities. This result came as a bit of a surprise, since many leading employers offer these perks as standard and often promote them heavily. These work perks are also still commonly seen in full-suite employee benefits packages across many industries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Supportive_Work_Environments_and_Mental_Health\"><b>Supportive Work Environments and Mental Health<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/offices.net\/news\/creating-a-healthy-and-productive-working-environment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supportive work environments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are essential for employee satisfaction and positive mental health. A great sign for the current state of workplace support, our survey revealed that <\/span><b>72%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of office workers felt their company was supportive of flexible working arrangements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, encouragingly, <\/span><b>46.5%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported a positive impact on their mental health since returning to the office. Image at Offices.net.\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/offices.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/return-to-office-trends-survey-of-employees-gridlocked-traffic-at-dusk-offices.net_.jpg 640w, https:\/\/offices.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/return-to-office-trends-survey-of-employees-gridlocked-traffic-at-dusk-offices.net_-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"The_Daily_Commute_Factor\"><b>The Daily Commute Factor<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commuting remains a big consideration for the modern office worker, with <\/span><b>51%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of survey respondents commuting 15\u201330 minutes to and from work every day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hip pocket costs associated with commuting are also significant, with over <\/span><b>40% of survey respondents spending up to 10% of their daily income on commute-related expenses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the widespread cost-of-living pressures, employers might consider how to alleviate these financial and time burdens, possibly through commuting benefits, carpool incentives, or more flexible work locations like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/offices.net\/coworking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coworking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> centers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"RTO_Strategic_Recommendations_for_Businesses\"><b>RTO: Strategic Recommendations for Businesses<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the major findings from our survey,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/offices.net\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offices.net<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends the following strategies for businesses looking to effectively entice workers back to the office:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Emphasize Flexibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Businesses should look at implementing hybrid work models or, at least, flexible working hours, so employees can start and finish work earlier or later to more easily fit work around their life commitments. From our survey, it\u2019s very evident that employees want some input into when and how often they work from the office.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Improve Office Amenities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Only 24% of workers are currently happy with working in the office full-time, so to keep these employees happy and to get the majority on board with an RTO, ongoing incentives and perks should be provided. Focus on amenities that add value and convenience, such as free meals, parking or travel allowances, improved social spaces, and wellness programs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Support Commuting Needs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: With almost 40% of office workers spending up to 10% of their take-home pay just on commuting costs, business leaders can play a part in alleviating some of this burden. This can be done practically by offering travel benefits, commute reimbursements, or more flexible options for work location.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Create a Supportive Office Environment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A great sign from our survey was that 46.5% of office workers felt their mental health improved when returning to the office. And with 72% of office workers currently feeling well-supported by their employer\u2019s flexible work policies, it\u2019s important to keep this clear majority happy.
